Its been awhile since the last issue of Dead Man’s Run and the creative team must have taken all that time to produce an incredible next issue. To catch you up, Sam Tinker is the world’s greatest young cartographer and that skill allows him to map even the most complex prison off Earth. Hell. Sam travels to this Hell prison to rescue his sister and encounters all manner of heroes, villains, allies and turncoats along the way. Oh and monsters. The most original, scary and brilliant citizens of hell from any media.
Dead Man’s Run has already surprised and shocked me with the ideas in previous issues. Fellow fans of the comic will remember the chains, the gold blood, and so much more. As a new title, taking place in a new world, the rules of this world are still being revealed. The impressive thing is how these ideas are so massive, so complex, and then Greg Pak explains how the human soul can create such things and the once complex becomes “Of course!”
I’ve yet to meet a fellow comic book fan who doesn’t love Greg Pak’s writing. If there is any excuse for not loving one of his books, its because they’ve yet to read it. He constantly fools and surprises the reader. The idea of children in this issue will take readers to new uncomfortable levels. This is increased by Tony Parker’s brilliant interpretation in the art. The blank stares, the monster (and to tell what it was created from and what it means would be spoiling), and the guilt. I need to put on a jacket because I’m still getting chills from this book 24 hours later.
There are a lot of good titles coming out today but please don’t miss this one. For those of you who love Saga for what its building, come down the alphabetical list to Dead Man’s Run. Just as much amazing work going on over here and well worth your money.
